Curriculum Rationale: Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum aims to secure the foundational knowledge, particularly proficiency in number, to help students access the curriculum in all areas and life beyond school. Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected subject that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most interesting problems. Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.

Our mathematics curriculum helps develop an understanding of the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Pupils will see how Mathematics can apply to various contexts and they will be able to reason and articulate Mathematically their Mathematical knowledge.

The mathematics curriculum at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes is research informed. We have organised the various mathematical topics and associated concepts in appropriately sequenced steps. This is so that pupils can build their knowledge of mathematics systematically over time towards ambitious curriculum end points. Pupils’ knowledge of how to work mathematically is woven through each of the topics across Years 7 to 11.

We aim to ensure that all our pupils who are disadvantaged or have any special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have access to a carefully planned curriculum. Our curriculum aims to provide pupils with SEND with explicit systematic teaching and rehearsal of knowledge. We also ensure that these pupils have the time they need to study important subject content in maths.

Curriculum Intent: Mathematics

The King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes mathematics curriculum has been developed to ensure that all pupils:

  • are equipped with the mathematical knowledge required to apply their knowledge to routine and non-routine problems

  • are equipped with the mathematical knowledge that allows pupils to communicate in a variety of contextual ways and develop justifications or proofs using mathematical language

  • are well prepared in the application of mathematics and can appreciate the mathematics in art and nature

  • become confident learners who have a curiosity for learning and are resilient in problem solving

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately

For each curriculum overview, additional documentation is available upon request. This documentation outlines more precisely the exact subject knowledge that your child must know and remember. These documents also include the types of teaching activities that subject staff have chosen to help your son/daughter learn the curriculum here at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes.

Assessment

In order to check of how well our pupils are learning the curriculum, teachers use a full range of assessment techniques. This includes diagnostic questions to reveal your child’s preconceptions and common misunderstandings in mathematics questioning and end of topic assessments.
