Our Spanish curriculum aims to ensure that all students gain the necessary academic skills and intellectual habits to understand that foreign languages are part of the rich cultural heritage of our society and the world we live in and that the ability to communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for employment and leisure as they enter the adult world.
The Spanish curriculum aims to help pupils recognise that languages provide a way of removing cultural barriers, allowing them to view their world from a different viewpoint providing them with the ability to embrace that fact that the world is a rich and diverse place filled with different customs, perspectives, history, arts, literature and ways of communicating
The Spanish curriculum at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes is research informed. It is informed by the recent Ofsted languages research document as well as the ideas put forward by Gianfranco Conti, Rachel Hawkes and others. We have organised the various Spanish topics and associated grammatical concepts in appropriately sequenced steps. This is so that pupils can build their knowledge of Spanish systematically over time towards ambitious curriculum end points.
We aim to ensure that all our pupils who are disadvantaged or have any special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have access to a carefully planned curriculum. Our curriculum aims to provide pupils with SEND with explicit systematic teaching and rehearsal of knowledge. We also ensure that these pupils have the time they need to study important subject content in Spanish.
The King’s Leadership academy Hawthornes Spanish curriculum has been developed to ensure that all pupils:
understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources in the original language
speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation
can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
For each curriculum overview, additional documentation is available upon request. This documentation outlines more precisely the exact subject knowledge that your child must know and remember. These documents also include the types of teaching activities that subject staff have chosen to help your son/daughter learn the curriculum here at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes.
In order to check how well our pupils are learning the curriculum, teachers use a full range of assessment techniques. These include diagnostic questions to reveal your child’s Spanish preconceptions and common misunderstandings, questioning and end of topic/learning cycle assessments.
