Curriculum Rationale: Statistics

The ability to make sense of data is an essential skill for working life and full citizenship in a modern society. Economies are increasingly data dependent and use data-intensive technologies. For example: government, finance, manufacturing, health, education, media, banking, retail, science and sports.

GCSE Statistics develops key transferable skills which students take into their other studies and their wider lives

During Key Stage Four students study: Collection of data, Processing and representing data, Summarising data, Scatter diagrams and correlation, Time series, Probability, Index numbers, Probability distribution. Each of these areas, will help them understand the world they live in and lead to them questioning statistics and having a thirst for seeking out more information in everything they read.

We aim to ensure that all our pupils who are disadvantaged or have any special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have access to a carefully planned curriculum. Our curriculum aims to provide pupils with SEND with explicit systematic teaching and rehearsal of knowledge. We also ensure that these pupils have the time they need to study important subject content in statistics.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum overview

For each curriculum overview, additional documentation is available upon request. This documentation outlines more precisely the exact subject knowledge that your child must know and remember. These documents also include the types of teaching activities that subject staff have chosen to help your son/daughter learn the curriculum here at King’s Leadership Academy Hawthornes.

Assessment

In order to check of how well our pupils are learning the curriculum, teachers use a full range of assessment techniques. This includes diagnostic questions to reveal your child’s preconceptions and common misunderstandings in statsitical questioning and end of topic assessments.
